If you own a radio set or a TV set or a mobile phone or, at the very least, a pair of ears in Zimbabwe, then you’ve come across an infectious melody by one Jah Master titled Hello Mwari. It’s everywhere. And if history has taught us anything, it’s that before long, so will the singer. Expect Jah Master’s face at a billboard near you, most likely sponsored by a telecommunications company promoting a product in their portfolio- say, a mobile wallet- with a caption along the lines of “Hello Mari! Join blablabla today!” Influencer marketing is a cycle we now know all too well, but how effective is it?

Due to the lockdown restrictions put in place since the covid-19 outbreak, many have resorted to working from home and this entails communicating with fellow workers online. Yesterday morning, our department management sent everyone an email reminding us of a scheduled video conference for later that night. In their words: “Dear marketers, you are reminded that we will all Skype on Zoom at 8PM tonight.” I wanted to respond that Skype is its own software and Zoom is another but I decided that it’d be better if I kept my job.

A friend of mine recently described Mambo’s as the middle ground between Chicken Inn and Nando’s- a compromise position between the low-end and the high-end. That’s usually a tricky situation to be in, especially in the highly competitive fast-food industry as it presents the marketing team with a crucial interrogation point: Who are we?

For those like me who consume all sorts of horrible entertainment, there’s a network channel called MTV- home to such classics like Teen Mom, 16 & Pregnant, Pimp My Ride, Cribs, My Super Sweet Sixteen- I guess you’re starting to see a trend here. No, not that they are all objectively horrible shows that cause immediate mental decline to each viewer, but that they are reality shows.

I attended a cute little jolly in the capital recently and catering was provided by a pair of sweethearts whose bosoms were branded “2 Chefs Zim.” My amative interest in them aside, there was a genuinely delighting aura to witnessing them collaboratively work a treat.

In 2014- a much simpler time, I know- a friend of a friend of mine launched an audio streaming platform called Olova (as in “all over”, get it?). Needless to say, it didn’t go all over and as of 10 December 2020, the app only has 100 downloads on Google Playstore. That’s 100 downloads in six years. That’s 16 downloads a year, and 0.5 downloads every month.

The term “long-play” (LP) is generally used to refer to a 12" vinyl record that plays at 33 RPM. Your parents will probably remember it. They used to play these on phonographs/ record players especially at a time like this; the festive season. Our grandparents called them “marecords” but this could not be entered into the Shona dictionary for obvious reasons. In lieu of the shongrish, we opted for a direct literal translation of “long play”- dambarefu.
